Earning Online Money Through Advertising
When it comes to ways to earn money by advertising online, the Internet is literally your oyster. They may not all contain pearls and you have to dig deep to find them, but with a little extra effort, it can certainly be worth the trouble.
When it comes to ways to earn money by advertising online, it helps to think of the Internet as a huge newspaper, which is effectively what it is: a digital media. In the same way that newspapers that have high readership can charge large amounts of money for display advertising, websites with high volumes of traffic can benefit from more advertising options and charge higher rates to display ads.
As with all things Internet related, in order to earn money by showing advertising online, it is generally necessary to think outside the box. That said, there are a few tried and true methods that have been around for a while and most definitely work.
Two of the most established ways are pay-per-click advertising and CPM advertising. Pay-per-click advertising entails allowing advertisers to place either an image based or a text based ad on your website and every time a new customer clicks on it, you receive a commission.
The most common form of pay-per-click advertising is Google AdSense, but there are others such as BidVertiser and Clicksor. CPM advertising is a similar concept but this time you get paid when your page or ad gets viewed 1,000 times. CPM stands for Cost per Mille (or one thousand).
If you have a website with a high volume of traffic to it, the most lucrative form of advertising is banner advertising. Banners can come in different sizes but the most popular sizes are the 728 x 90 leaderboard, the 120 x 600 skyscraper, the 300 x 250 rectangle and the 125 x 125 button.
Banner advertising can be more lucrative because it basically means that it is possible to cut out the middleman, such as Google AdSense, and retain all the revenue from advertising for yourself. As it is usually up to the customer to design their own ads, there is overhead for the advertising platform.
If you like to write and have started a blog, it could be possible to use this generate advertising revenue. In the same way that you might stick bumper stickers on your car advertising anything from Nike to RipCurl, it’s possible to attract advertisers that feel the content of your blog matches their brand ethos. If you are an avid surfer and attract lots of surfers, RipCurl might be interested in placing an ad.
Another way to generate money from blogs is with job boards. It would, however, take a long time to build up the kind of traffic that could justify a jobs board although it is not unheard of. Problogger is an example.
